Couples Counseling in Georgetown, TX

Gottman Method Couples Therapy with Sonya Jensen, LMFT-S

Every relationship faces difficult seasons. When communication breaks down, conflict escalates, or emotional and physical intimacy begin to fade, it can be hard to know how to move forward. Couples counseling provides a structured space to slow down, understand one another more clearly, and rebuild trust and connection.

I’m Sonya Jensen, LMFT-S, a Certified Gottman Therapist, AASECT Certified Sex Therapist, and Certified Clinical Trauma Professional. I specialize in helping couples navigate complex relationship dynamics, including high-conflict communication patterns, emotional disconnection, and intimacy concerns. My approach integrates Gottman Method Couples Therapy and Emotionally Focused Therapy, two of the most research-supported approaches to relationship counseling.

Through couples therapy, partners learn how to improve communication, repair conflict more effectively, and strengthen the emotional foundation of their relationship.

Marriage Counseling, Premarital Counseling, and Relationship Therapy

Couples seek therapy for many different reasons. Some want to strengthen their relationship before marriage, while others are navigating long-standing patterns of conflict, loss of intimacy, or betrayal.

In my Georgetown practice, I work with couples who are experiencing:

  • Recurring arguments and communication breakdowns

  • High-conflict relationship dynamics

  • Emotional disconnection or distance

  • Infidelity, betrayal, or broken trust

  • Sexual concerns such as desire discrepancy, painful sex, or loss of intimacy

  • Premarital counseling and relationship preparation

Many couples who seek therapy deeply care about their relationship but feel stuck in patterns they don’t yet know how to change. Couples counseling helps partners understand those patterns and develop healthier ways of relating.

A Research-Based Approach to Couples Therapy

My work with couples is grounded in decades of relationship research, including the Gottman Method, which focuses on improving communication, strengthening friendship within the relationship, and developing practical tools for navigating conflict.

In therapy, we focus on helping couples:

  • Identify destructive communication patterns

  • Strengthen emotional safety and trust

  • Improve conflict management skills

  • Rebuild intimacy and connection

  • Develop a deeper understanding of one another’s needs

As a trauma-informed clinician and Certified Sex Therapist, I also help couples explore how past experiences, attachment patterns, and sexual concerns may influence their relationship today.

My role is not to take sides, but to help both partners better understand the relational system they have created together and learn how to shift it toward greater connection and stability.
